So this is The Waves Burn Bright, my third novel. At its core is the Piper Alpha disaster of 1988, where 167 men lost their lives. It was published by Freight in 2016, received some excellent reviews and got me invited to the Edinburgh International Book Festival, and then went out of print less that a year later when Freight went under (I have to stress the connections between publication of this book and the demise of the publishing company are only indirect. To date I have yet to single-handedly bring down a publisher).
I really enjoyed The Waves Burn Bright, though I can't for the life of me work out how I came to pick it up in print form. Hillhead library in Glasgow, perhaps, or the Shelter shop on Great Western Road that is a good source for me of books well worth reading (with thanks to those who share them there). That must have been about 3 years ago, as Aberdeen had just become a city I was beginning to know, through student offspring. Whereas, as a scot of a certain age the Piper Alpha tragedy is one that is seared into me from media at the time. The novel brought to me for the first time, however, how the dreadful consequences had affected people from then and no doubt until now. I do hope it can be republished in book form. And I will enjoy the film when it comes!
